President: James J. McGovern, Ph. D.

Dr. McGovern recently retired as president of A.T. Still University of Health Sciences after ten years of highly successful leadership.  He transformed a medical school into a university with two medical schools, a dental school, an on-line health management school, and two other schools with doctoral degrees in the health sciences.

While at that university, Dr. McGovern helped quadruple the endowment and triple the amount of sponsored research.  He also established national seminars on the interactions among the mind, body, and spirit.  At a recent seminar, authors Andrew Weil, Antonio Damasio, Carl Hammerschlag, and Candace Pert jointly discussed this topic.  He and his wife, Rene, recently wrote a book on the mind, body, and spirit interactions in healing called Your Healer Within.

While director of the Office of Health Finance for the State of Illinois, Dr. McGovern coordinated over three billion dollars in state funds to hospitals, nursing homes, public health, mental health and developmental disabilities.  He also directed a statewide project of evaluation and reimbursement for all types of developmentally disabled people.  The resulting Illinois Client-based Information System (ICIS) has been used in over twenty states and six foreign countries.  With ICIS, providers prospectively proposed the aspects and levels of care that they would provide to each client and were reimbursed accordingly.

Dr. McGovern has a Ph. D. from New York University’s Department of Administration and Organizational Studies and has a master’s degree in the natural sciences from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute. He has done cost-benefit analysis of hospitals, nursing homes, and all sorts of facilities for the developmentally disabled.  He has studied emotional and cognitive development for several decades and has written and lectured on these topics across the United States and in several foreign countries.
